About SMI

Three companies — Nestlé, Roche and Novartis — carry so much of the Swiss blue-chip index that its direction is frequently theirs alone, and all three are defensive by nature, which gives the board a different rhythm from Frankfurt or Paris. Around them sit UBS, enlarged by the absorption of its former rival, Zurich Insurance and Swiss Re, ABB and Holcim in industry, Richemont in luxury goods, Givaudan and Lonza in specialised chemistry. Reporting is half-yearly in Swiss practice, so the fundamentals view is the annual series. The franc is the quote currency, and a strong franc quietly compresses results reported by companies that sell abroad.
