About London Stock Exchange
London's largest listings are barely British businesses. Shell, AstraZeneca, HSBC, Unilever, Rio Tinto and Glencore earn most of their money abroad, so a sterling price can move on a currency swing rather than on anything the company did that week. Prices are commonly quoted in pence rather than pounds, which catches newcomers out. The United Kingdom dropped mandatory quarterly reporting, and most companies now publish half-year and full-year accounts only — so this hub shows the annual series and says so, using the quarterly view only for the companies that still file that often. London also hosts an unusually large population of closed-end investment trusts.
